TV fame for Quaker cake

A Quaker cake is set for TV fame today as it appears in the BBC television programme, The Great British Bake Off. Tottenham Cake was invented by a Quaker baker, Henry Chalkley.

A regular sponge cake, the Quaker Tottenham Cake’s stand-out feature is its lurid pink icing. The icing traditionally features mulberries from the burial ground at Tottenham Quaker Meeting.

Tottenham Quaker Doreen Brown features in the programme alongside the cake. The television programme, shown on BBC2 at 8pm, features 13 bakers ‘baking off’ in a contest which tests their skills. The winner receives the accolade of “Great British Bake Off’s Best Amateur Baker”.

Being on the telly is said to be the icing on the cake, for the, err, cake.
